What I remember about Utah Phillips is that he understood the system that
all of us live under, and he showed us an example of how we could try to
live something resembling a principled life while not becoming hermits.
Next time we are worried about our promo, our gigs, our "careers," our
putative royalties, and so forth, we should take a moment and think about
Utah, and why in the world we have chosen music as a way of life.
There is a saying in Africa that no one is dead until the last person who
remembers them is gone. Thanks to Ani DiFranco for giving Utah an extended
lease on a well-spent life.
