I love this (somewhat silly) discussion..!
We have has this debate internally for years and never come to a satisfying conclusion. So, you will probably find in FolkWorks that it is spelled both ways, depending on which of us edited the piece <smile>
Now you can guess which of us prefers which spelling

If you believe it was derived from the audio industry, boards and other
equipment have labels for such things as Mic/Line Switch, Mic Input and
Mic Level.
