I love this (somewhat silly) discussion..!
We have has this debate internally for years and never come to a satisfying conclusion. So, you will probably find in FolkWorks that it is spelled both ways, depending on which of us edited the piece <smile>
Now you can guess which of us prefers which spelling

At this point in time, Google sez "open mike" has about 1,130,000 
references on that thar Web thingy; "open mic" has about 4,960,000.

If you believe it was derived from the audio industry, boards and other 
equipment have labels for such things as Mic/Line Switch, Mic Input and 
Mic Level.
