Hi everyone,
I just thought I'd let you know that we just posted this Q & A on
www.DubMC.com (the " world music trade journal" online):
Translating the World: Q&A With Robert Singerman about World Music Lyric
Translations, Live and Recorded
http://www.dubmc.com/dubmc/2008/03/translating-the.html#more
While I personally do not think language translation is THE solution to
global music reaching larger audiences, I do think it is an important tool
to have as an option in the overall marketing/audience development
portfolio. And Robert has been keeping his finger on the pulse of this for a
few years now. I know when Robert mentioned this at APAP, especially the
technology that allows for "real voice" translation allowing artists to
record songs in their own voice, but in another language, some people looked
like they were watching a human baby be cloned. Regardless, imagine if all
audiences could not only enjoy the music of all corners of the planet, but
could explore the lyrical content. I have also heard the argument that some
people would rather NOT know what the lyrics mean. Anyway read Robert's
summary to get a quick overview on several options out there.
