In addition to Bollywood icon Asha Bhosle who's been mentioned, add Lata 
Mangeshkar (if she's not on the list already).

Maybe also Elvy Sukaesih from Indonesia, the foremost living female 
dangdut singer, if she hasn't yet been mentioned - ?  Although whether she 
qualifies as a 'historical' figure, I don't know...

Actually, for a truly historical figure, check out the late Princess 
Constance Magogo from South Africa.  The first opera to be performed in 
the Zulu language apparently was one about her ("Princess Magogo
