I believe that world music--wherever it is performed or heard--helps promote
intercultural understanding. We would all benefit from an increase in
understanding, starting here at home where there is so much jingoistic, racist
xenophobia.

With Bush's latest spin that success allows a very slow drawdown of troops
(probably just ones that were already scheduled to come back), the chaos that
his war has created in Iraq is unlikely to decline any time soon.

A million--or fewer--people working to give the Iraqi people their country and
lives back would make a difference. I wouldn't want to go as an individual
currently due to the incredible danger, but with a big enough group, some
safety buffer would be provided.

In the meantime, every time the members of the world music community promote
that music helps create stronger international ties of friendship,
understanding, and respect that will hopefully prevent future evil wars.
