[FA Worldmusic] possible discussion topic for APAP

I think this is an important topic. The NA WMC is organizing sessions for
Friday at Arts Presenters, and there may be a way to fold this into one of
those panels. The panel topics were picked a couple of months ago after a
call for suggestions, and we have settled on the following two morning
sessions and we are cooperating with the Summer Presenters group and APAP
itself on the afternoon session which has to do with the "greening" of the
arts (title tbd).
The two morning sessions are listed below....it seems this may best fit with
the music diplomacy session, so at a minimum I suggest attending that
session, there will be time for Q&A, and this could certainly be raised
during that point of the program.
The Role of Global Music in Geo-Political Diplomacy
Musicians are playing an increasing role in drawing attention to political
issues playing out around the globe. From events like the Live Earth
concerts that took place earlier this year to the less well-known but
productive work of artists like David Broza and Simon Shaheen working with
Palestinians and Israelis to establish points of commonality, this is an
arena where the presenter, artist, and audiences can intersect and focus
their energies in bringing about much-needed changes in society.
Genre Hopping: How Some Global Artists and Presenters have Avoided the World
Music Ghetto, and Marketing Lessons We Can Learn from Them
An emerging conversation topic among global music circles is how to break
out of the "world music ghetto" to reach audiences who would not normally
think of themselves as a "world music" fan. Does the category that lumps
together thousands of unrelated genres create more obstacles than
opportunities? How have some artists and presenters overcome this dilemma?
How do you decide when to market an artist as "world music" or under another
heading? This lively discussion will call upon expertise and anecdotes of
the all attendees to move this discussion forward in our field.
The NA WMC certainly hopes to see a strong turn-out for these opportunities
to dialogue with colleagues ...
