I'm so glad you're continuing this conversation at WOMEX Dmitri. I will be on
assignment in Buenos Aires so will not be attending this year, but thanks for
this chance to speak up from the digital music service side.
I was Latin & World programmer for MTV digital music service URGE and now
working in same capacity at RHAPSODY.
As with URGE, RHAPSODY has a great catalogue of international music coming
from labels and aggregators.
For me the issue is still that I'm not getting enough communication from
labels and publicists regarding releases (new and catalogue titles).
Fundamentally please provide digital music release date information on the
press release. The service can get thousands of tracks in each day, and of
course if I am not alerted to when the music will be available ahead of time
it is difficult to promote it as this is decided in advance, and I just do not
have time to inquire about the release date of the many advance CDs I receive
without this information (and it is not always the same as the physical
release date).
I realize there are time issues for label people as well, but when you can
follow through with your aggregators to know the exact date a release will
reach the digital stores that would be so helpful, and I expect you would see
more promotion and I hope more sales of your music this way. I'm trying to
give global music as much exposure as possible and I need as much information
as possible to do so. I assume that programmers at other digital outlets feel
the same way.
Also always looking to do interviews, playlists with/ stories about artists
which can appear on the site, in the service and also on the Rhapsody blog:
Please take a look:
http://blog.rhapsody.com/2007/09/the-unsinkable-.html#more
It seems that labels and publicists in other genres (pop, hip-hop, Latin) are
much more aware of or simply more interested in these opportunities then those
that work with what can be categorized at world. I hope that can change.
Please check out RHAPSODY and contact me as you like. www.rhapsody.com
Thank You!

Hey everyone,
In light of the emerging discussion from Robert about the use of technology
for language translation, I was wondering if I could enlist your help. At
WOMEX at the end of this month, I am running a session titled: "Digital
Market
Explosion - Experiments in Marketing Global Music in the Online Economy" (Oct
25, 15:00-15:45, nr-2).
Similar to the session I facilitated at Arts Presenters in January on the
topic, I would like to use a wiki model... that is rather than presenting as
an expert on the subject, I would like the large field of professionals to
share their experiments, thoughts, ideas on this subject. This means: A. for
those of you not attending WOMEX, pipe up here and now and B. those who are
attending, please consider attending with your ideas at the ready (and
letting
us know on this listserv what you have in mind, so that I can make sure to
make space for you during the session). That January session was, for me, the
first time I really substantively saw intergenerational confusion in the
"world music" field in North America.
The last time around a lot of people were still getting together their
MySpace
pages (or getting their first feedback as to whether it was working), using
YouTube for the first time, hearing about Pandora/Last.FM. Now only a mere
nine months later, I really want to hear what online tools and other new
technologies you are using for your artists, labels, retailers, venues, etc.
Who is using ring tones, mass text messaging, twitter, facebook, promonet,
electronic radio tracking, etc. and how is it going? What are your favorite
new tools online changing the way you do business?
Much respect,
Dmitri Vietze
