Wow....that's a fascinating test of the honor system indeed.
When I was at Symphony Space, we created a series with Don Byron that
had a "pay what you will with a suggested donation" pricing policy. I
think most audiences responded well to that - no one was excluded over
price, but people still tended to put some money into the bucket and
valued the performance.

Radiohead is about to make some history??
Radiohead new album: music industry react to unique release
Experts predict 'In Rainbows' will 'change how people think about music'
4 hours ago Music industry experts are saying the unique way Radiohead's
new
album 'In Rainbows' is being released will revolutionise the way people
think about music.
The band have not set a price for the download version of the album,
leaving
the "price" field blank, to let customers decided how much to pay for
it.
Adam Benzine of music industry bible 'Music Week' said it will really
shake
things up in terms of album pricing.
"Radiohead have really put the cat amongst the pigeons with this one,"
he
told NME.COM. "The album will revolutionise the way people think about
music. It had already forced people to question how much music is
actually
worth. I saw a posting on a forum with a fan saying he would pay ?2.50
for
it!
"Radiohead have always been about asking questions of their audience.
When
they did their 'tent tour', they wanted to do a tour without any
branding."
Benzine added that it will have a lasting impact on the future of the
music
industry.
"The timing of this comes when The Charlatans are giving their album
away as
a free download, Prince is giving a DVD away as a covermount free with
'The
Observer' and Travis gave away a veritable Best Of free with the 'Mail
On
Sunday'," he explained. "This move continues the changing musical
landscape
for established artists."

Intersting piece in the NY Times this morning.
"Starting tomorrow at certain Starbucks stores, a person with an iPhone
or
iTunes software loaded onto a laptop can download the songs they hear
over
the speakers directly onto those devices. The price will be 99 cents a
song,
a small price, Starbucks says, to satisfy an immediate urge."
