Media choice is not the point. The airwaves ARE owned by us, the US
public, and basically given to media corporations to use for free - and
they make huge profits from this precious resource we own, but do not
currently control. In return for this blank check we have given them,
media corporations are supposed to serve the public interest. And the
FCC is supposed to make sure they do that. Unfortunately, they haven't
done so, for decades now.

But we do still own the airwaves, and we still need the media who use
them to provide us with the information we need to be informed
citizens. Our very democracy is at stake in this issue. And we clearly
can't count on the marketplace to serve our best interests, it's not
built to do that. One look at the music business we all work in proves
that. So does the fact that media consolidation issues are rarely
covered by commercial media. Since the FCC is not doing its job, it is
up to all of us to make sure our interests are served.
