Subject: Garifuna music -
Suffolk County will be holding its first "Unity Day/Celebrating Our
Diversity" event, on Friday June 1, from 10AM-4PM, at the County office
building grounds on Veterans Highway in Hauppauge (10AM-1PM will focus on
children; also in development is an evening concert).
The various activities are to include a series of cultural events --
music, dance, theater, storytelling, etc. -- that reflect the County's very
diverse cultural makeup. Performance spaces will include a large outdoor
stage with sound system and operator, and two more intimate locations. The
length of each cultural event is not set in concrete, but I'd guess they'll
average 20 minutes each.
I am a member of the Planning Committee for this event, and the
chairperson of the subcommittee that is responsible for selecting and
scheduling the various cultural events. I would love to find out that there
is a Garifuna population in Suffolk County, of whatever size, as that would
allow me to try to get a local Garifuna band to participate; as Alison
points out, I can't get enough of Andy Palacio's music. Can you advise
whether such a population exists and, if it does, whether there are any
"local" bands that should be contacted?
The bad news: There is no budget to pay artists fees. Nevertheless,
we hope that a nearby group would be willing to participate, given the
nature of the daylong event and the opportunity to perform before many of
the area's diverse residents, including numerous established concert
presenters (which should be highly motivated to book such an artist after
the area is exposed to Andy Palacio's music via the Huntington Arts Council
concert). Naturally our artists will be featured in media and other event
promotional activities, and they may distribute their own promotional
materials. Although this may not be of value to them, we also are
attempting to borrow some back line items -- a drum set (and possibly other
percussion instruments), bass, and keyboard -- in order to make
participation easier.
I hope that we have an opportunity to discuss this matter; my phone
number is 631-231-7460.
Also, if you know of any other good Afropop, African salsa etc. groups that
might be interested, I'd love to hear about them as well.
Regards,
Steve Bard
