Hey comrades -
Another worldmusic SXSW tip, as I've already told Bill Bragin (Joe's Pub,
Globalfest, WOMEX) and other folks:
I just saw Asakusa Jinta, a fun and frenetic young Tokyo band with a
somewhat thrashy but still very musical take on the Japanese street band
(chin-don) / Balkan / klezmer axis. Actually broadly part of the
burgeoning global street band scene (amphetamine wing) - they dress loud,
make a lot of noise, campily posture and pogo around the stage etc. But
they are really good musicians too. They're on a package tour called
"Japan Nite" that's pegged to SXSW. Most of the other bands on the tour
are more rock-centered although a lot of female membership, which is nice.
Around SXSW they're playing Brush Square Park on the 15th and The Hideout
on the 17th (the hideout gig is NOT with the other Japan Nite bands).

I also have band and tour manager contact info if anyone's interested. I
don't have any vested interest in the band - only that I want them to come
back to New York so I can have them on my show on WFMU - since I couldn't
do it this time because of our fundraiser!
