Congratulations to Andy Palacio and Ivan Duran for winning the
prestigious WOMEX prize for 2007!! Andy richly deserves this recognition
for his tireless work in support of the unique Garifuna culture of
Belize and elsewhere in Central America, as well as his soulful album
"Watina" and previous projects. Also winning the WOMEX prize is Ivan
Duran the Stone Tree label head, engineer and tireless advocate for
Garifuna culture who often single-handedly kept music production for
Garifuna music going.

Via on-demand streaming, you can hear our one-hour special on Andy and
the Garifuna Collective including live recordings of their U.S. debut at
GlobalFest in early 2007. Also available is Banning Eyre's extended
interview with Andy.

The extraordinary TEDGlobal 2007 (technology, entertainment and design)
conference just concluded in Arusha Tanzania. I was invited to attend,
joining leaders from many disciplines in 40 countries around the
continent, Europe and the U.S. The musical highlights included the
fierce Bi Kidude (also WOMEX prize winner) singing with the magnificent
Culture Musical Club. Rokia Traore and Vusi Mahlasela also wowed
TEDstes. (Kudos to TED music Advisor Bill Bragin for curating this trio
of artists.) See my report and photos here:
