Hello all!
I'd like to introduce "Around the World," a new regular world music
column, appearing weekly on Spinner.com, AOL's music news and
discussion site.
http://www.spinner.com/category/around-the-world/
I'm quite proud to be writing this feature, which I started two
months ago. The latest column is on Nawal, a remarkable woman from
the Comoros Islands. But as you can see, I'll be exploring sounds
from all over the globe and from many different perspectives.
Just by way of introduction, I've been covering pop (and other) music
for the Los Angeles Times for 22 years, as well as writing for many
other publications along the way. I'm also the music critic for "The
California Report," a radio newsmagazine produced by KQED-FM in San
Francisco and airing on non-commercial stations throughout the Golden
State.
My musical passions are vast and broad, and I've had the privilege of
experiencing music live in many locales -- throughout Eastern Europe
on numerous trips (Serbia and Montenegro a few months ago, Estonia
and Hungary last summer being the most recent jaunts), as well as in
Bali, Morocco, Spain, Peru and other places my wife and I have visited.
I welcome any/all feedback and suggestions for Around the World.
Please leave comments on the site if you can, positive or negative.
Here's to great music from everywhere!
Steve
p.s. Keep an eye out for upcoming column explaining why I dislike the
term "world music"!!
