Andrew's beautiful musicianship is always a marvel -- high in Himalayan space and time...
His performance takes place at the delightful, extraordinary Rubin Museum of Art during the Arts Presenters Conference on Friday evening -- along with so many other great performances throughout the city.
Dmitri has already listed this in his Unofficial World Music Schedule - and here's more info about Andrew.

Andrew Sterman Group
In Concert
this Friday at 7pm (!)
at the Rubin Museum's concert space,
150 W.17th St., at 7th Ave.

In the program will be several new compositions, including

"Bullets Through An Open Sky", written for a Bodhisattva statue (on display at the Rubin Museum on the 2nd floor, southeast corner, for those interested in viewing it before the concert) which is riddled with bullet holes from the Red Army invasion of Tibet

"For Kermit", written to celebrate our bassist's ongoing recovery from a serious illness, and a surprise for the band (we won't be rehearsing this one, but rather, the group will sight read and improvise on it in concert; please don't mention it to them if you know the group members.)

"Jnana" the finished version of a piece written after my daughter's birth nearly three months ago.

In addition, we'll be performing "Wet Paint", inspired by a line of a Jack Gilbert poem; "The Poet From Istanbul", a musical portrait of a character in Orhan Pamuk's novel "Snow" (since composing this piece, Pamuk received the Nobel Prize for literature); " A Very, Very Happy Lama", inspired by an eminent Tibetan Rinpoche who holds his happiness in the face of difficulties to be his true teaching credentials, rather than his prodigious formal training; "The Well ", a quintet in five/four time and five flats written to explore warmth, clarity and the ease of creation, with extremely free improvisation; "Pleasant Pheasant", a juxtaposition of quirky energy and careful counterpoint; and also a selection from my music inspired by the inner life of Gandhi from the forthcoming " Path To Peace" CD. All performed with no amplification, in the beautiful acoustics of the RMA's concert space.

What the critics are saying:

"Andrew Sterman's Blue Canvas with Spiral is a beautiful jazz CD, powerfully played and containing that certain spark seldom heard...." Randy Raine-Reusch, Musicworks

"Beautiful and sensitive playing" Paul Griffiths, The New York Times

"Stirringly soulful... Sterman's tenor praises life's joy" Elliot Simon, All About Jazz New York
