[FA Worldmusic] Joe's Pub shows during IAJE
Bill Bragin
bbragin at publictheater.org
Tue Jan 9 00:46:41 EST 2007
Hi all,
I generally don't talk about Joe's Pub shows on this list, but since
there will be many of you coming from out of town for either IAJE or
Arts Presenters over the next two weeks, I wanted to send the full
schedule of upcoming Joe's Pub events for this IAJE week, with a list of
upcoming APAP shows as well. Most tickets can be purchased online at
www.joespub.com
The email below has lots of links to downloadable MP3's from nearly
every artist playing here, and our website has an increasing number of
links to live footage on Youtube, so if there are any unfamiliar artists
you want to know more about, whether or not you intend on coming to the
show, it's actually a great way to discover new artists.
In general, if you want comps to any of the below shows, I'd recommend
contacting the agencies/labels of the artists. The nature of these two
weeks makes house tickets of any kind very difficult. Thanks for
understanding.
One other reminder, globalFEST has moved to a new, larger venue, Webster
Hall, and is on Sunday, January 21 this year. Because it's not at the
Public, tickets are not available on our website. Please visit
www.ticketweb.com for tickets to this event. Wanna try before you
buy??? Check out videos of globalFEST artists online at Youtube with
our new playlist:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=16542BB38BC2EAD6
Or listen to audio samples at www.globalfest-ny.org
<http://www.globalfest-ny.org/>
If you want to get on my weekly email list for all joe's pub shows, to
get this information regularly, please email me offlist. It also
contains early notice about ne shows just added to our schedule, such as
Neil Sedaka, just confirmed for late April !
All the best,
Bill

ASHLEY DAVIS
"Ashley Davis is a young woman with a beautiful voice and as much
musicality as anyone could wish for. She writes and sings with a
confidence way beyond her years."- Philip Glass
In the tradition of Celtic mavens such as Loreena McKennitt and Moya
Brennan, Ashley Davis <http://daisyrings.com/> takes the best of the
old and molds it into something uniquely beautiful, yet ascetically
familiar. Through colorful stories and luminous songs, Ashley guides her
audience back to a time when songs and stories were the center stone of
the wintry night...

CHRISTIAN SCOTT / LERON THOMAS
Friday on January 12 at 11:30 PM $18
<http://joespub.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=AaEALf----8AAPiB>
CHRISTIAN SCOTT
One of the brightest jazz stars to emerge in the last few years is
22-year-old trumpeter Christian Scott <http://www.christianscott.net/> ,
fresh from his June appearance in the JVC Jazz Festival's Trumpet
Celebration. His Concord Jazz debut Rewind That is arguably the most
remarkable premiere the genre has seen in the last decade. Instead of
retreading bebop the way so-called young lions did in the early 1990s,
Scott delivers a smart, grooved, and plugged-in set of tunes.
Houston-born trumpeter Leron Thomas <http://www.myspace.com/LeronThomas>
first made his mark on the jazz world when still a high school student
at Houston's arts magnet school, attending with future leaders such as
Jason Moran and Eric Harland, to name a few...

MAD JUANA
Joe Hurley <http://www.roguesmarch.com/> is a London-bred,
Irish-blooded New Yorker who is widely heralded for both the emotional
delivery in his gravel-throated baritone, and his finely tuned sense of
lyrical detail. Hurley's ballad 'Amsterdam Mistress" is featured on the
new SONY release Whiskey in the Jar: Essential Irish Drinking Songs and
Singalongs alongside classics from the Dubliners, Clancy Brothers and
The Pogues.
Mad Juana <http://www.madjuana.com/> 's sound is their own distinct
hash. A blend rich with swamp blues, dub, reggae, and a dash of mariachi
/flamenco- all simmered on a succulent backbone of rock that's often
compared to The Stooges and The Velvet Underground...

globalFEST
"Held during the convention of the Association of Performing Arts
Presenters, Globalfest let bookers size up 13 acts in six hours,
wielding instruments from oud to button accordion, tuba to laptop.
Visions of world music as a realm of newly visible traditions and pure
local styles have given way, at Globalfest, to a more realistic, less
romantically exotic perspective. Musicians have always made choices
about what to preserve and what to change from their heritage; now, they
can sample countless possibilities." - Jon Pareles, The New York Times
globalFEST will take place on Sunday January 21, 2007 starting at 7pm,
as part of the annual Arts Presenters Conference (APAP). The 2007
edition of globalFEST has moved to NYC's historic Webster Hall FOR ONE
NIGHT ONLY. Pay one price for an evening-long festival of contemporary
and traditional music from around the globe. To find out more, visit the
globalFest website, french culture.org, french music.org or APAP.
