Thanks for posting this. Glad to hear Wiyos did well - I have worked
with them a few times, and they are a good old-timey jug band. Joe Bass
from the group recently did a dj set at Joe's Pub as DJ Arnette,
spinning old 78s from the 10s, 20s, 30s and 40's using two hand-cranked
Victrolas, on a bill put together by Sxip Shirey of the
Appalachian/Gypsy band Luminescent Orchestrii. It was a great visual to
see him crate-digging old 78's....

Subject: [FA Worldmusic] Folk Alliance in memphis

Hi there

Just noticed that there has been no feedback from memphis so far. I
was speaking to Sten Sandahl (Swedish Concert Institute) last night,
and he remarked that he is encouraged by the increasing amount of
world music at Folk Alliance in recent years. I have to agree. I also
pointed out that there is more traditional "American" music this year
as well. He replied that to him that is also World Music.

Anyhow, highlights so far for me:

Vardos (Australia. Romanian / Hungarian music)

Les Amis Creole (Louisiana)

Pine Leaf Boys (Louisiana)

Carolina Chocolate Drops (N. Carolina)

Mamadou Diabate (USA these days)

The Wiyos (NYC)

and the Blues Tour to Clarksdale was a blast. I understand more about
The Blues now than I have learned in 40 years listening to music. And
I went to The Crossroads, too.

There is a very good all-girl Mariachi band here as well. Sorry,
can't remember their name at present.

Anyhow, the weather is warm and sunny, so too the music, and the DJs
still represent the most cohesive and creative "peer group" at the
conference. Life looks pretty good from down here right now.

Have a great day, y'all
