Welcome to the 7TH e-newsletter of the North American World Music Coalition 
(NAWMC), Thank you to all who have submitted items for this newsletter. Once 
again there is great breadth and depth of information provided by our 
members, and we hope the material and the newsletters simple-to-scan format 
are helpful as you go about your business. The INDEX below lists the

FROM THE EDITOR
It was a great pleasure to meet so many of you at APAP last month.  It was 
also wonderful to see so many people  from the world music community and 
beyond  attend the NAWMC pre-conference sessions on what most everyone felt 
to be a stimulating and important set of conversations on some of the deeper 
issues in presenting world music today.  We hope to have some kind of 
documentation of the sessions available in the near future on our 
soon-to-launch, new and improved NAWMC website, www.worldmusiccoalition.org.

NAWMC at SXSW
The Coalition has secured a booth at the up coming SXSW conference in
Austin, TX from March 14th to 18th. If you will be at the event, please feel 
free to come by and make use of the stand. You can put out your promotional 
items, use if as a meeting place, and if you have the time, we are also

ANDY PALACIO & THE GARIFUNA COLLECTIVE: Belize,
10 members + 2 staff
With a stunning concert in NYC at Globalfest during the recent Arts 
Presenters conference, and accolades already coming in for their Watina 
release, Andy Palacio and the Garifuna Collective promise to deliver a high- 
octane and soul-stirring evening of music...introducing audiences to the 
music and culture of the Garifuna. As revelatory as Paul Simon's 
"Graceland" or the Buena Vista Social Club, Watina - with its sunset 
palette - could just be the dawn of a new day for the Garifuna's overlooked 
culture (NY Newsday).

ASHLEY MAHER: US/Canada, world/folk/jazz/pop, 2 - 9 performers
Solo artist Ashley Maher has recorded four albums (two for Virgin UK) with 
top West African & Latin musicians in London, Paris, and Los Angeles.  Her 
voice sounds like Joni Mitchell.  Her music sounds like Paul Simon meets 
Youssou NDour.  Ashley's performances range from acoustic to mid-size to 
her Big Global Band, featuring musicians from Cameroon, Senegal, Venezuela, 
Brazil, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and the USA, plus fiery West African dancers, 
and she has opened for Baaba Maal and Salif Keita.  Ashley is touring to 
promote her fourth CD, "Flying Over Bridges," produced by Cameroon's Andre 
Manga.  She is actively seeking a booking agent.

ANGILIQUE KIDJO: Benin, Africa, 7-9 Members
One of the worlds most electrifying performers, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador 
Angilique Kidjo has garnered four Grammy nominations while cross-pollinating 
the West African music of Benin with elements of R&B, funk, jazz, and Latin. 
With her fun-loving personality and on-stage charisma, Angilique is one of 
the most popular artists on the current world music scene.  Her new album, 
Djin Djin, is set to be released on May 1, 2007 via Razor & Tie and 
Starbucks Entertainment, and features duets with notables such as Josh

EMELINE MICHEL: Haiti/USA, Afro-Haitian Roots Music, 6-8 members
Hailed as "The Reigning Queen of Haitian Song" Emeline Michel blends such 
classic Haitian rhythms as compa, rara, zouk and twoubadou with jazz, rock, 
samba and reggae to create a sound that is uniquely her own.   She is 
currently working on a new CD (recorded in USA, Haiti and Burkina Faso) to 
be released Late Summer 2007.

ETRAN FINATAWA: Niger, 6-8 members + 1 staff
The remarkable debut of these Tuareg and Woodabe musicians is already 
causing a stir in Europe Sounding like the late Ali Farka Touri 
collaborating with Dimi Mint Abba and tossing in a smidgen of Eric Clapton 
(The Beat), Etran Finatawa...rootsier, grittier and overall more hypnotic 
sound. A blending of 10 musicians from two tribes of Niger, their debut is a 
fantastical voyage through deep, heavy-handed percussion with luminous earth 
tone bass linesThe six-string guitar playing is excellent, weaving and

>From the Sahara desert, a land wracked by warfare and harsh climate, has 
risen a world music phenomenon, bringing global attention to the region, the 
resilience of its people, and the exquisite beauty of their music. 
Tinariwen, pioneer band of Tuareg people, journeyed from refugee camps and 
civil war to create some of the most beguiling songs on the world stage. 
Vieux Farka Toure, carrying on his father Ali Farka Toures legacy, creates 
globally-minded music where African melody meets reggae and rock. The Mariem 
Hassan Group presents the activism of exiled Sahwari women with grace and 
harmonious singing.

GAL COSTA: Brazil, 6 Members
Unanimously regarded as one of Brazil's most important musical exports 
alongside Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gal Costa 
has released over 30 albums, sold millions of records worldwide, and 
appeared in major motion pictures. Known primarily as the Tropicalismo 
movements foremost female singer and guitarist of the late 1960's, Gal now 
entrances audiences with her intimate take on Bossa Nova.

GANGBI BRASS BAND: Benin, 10 Members
Benins explosive and colorful Gangbi Brass Band explore the rich voodoo

traditional "Township Jazz" and "Mbaquanga" of Soweto, through classic 
Afropop and onward to the urban "Kwaito" music of modern Johannesburg, this 
uplifting engagement will showcase South Africa's rich cultural, political 
and musical journey.

KATE RUSBY: United Kingdom, 2-4 Members
Her dedication to the most pure version of English folk music has 
transformed the genre. Because of Kate, "English Folk Music" is no longer 
considered a dirty phrase among fans and critics. She makes folk music for 
people who never thought they would like folk music. The Girl Who Couldn't 
Fly, is a blend of traditional folk tunes and new originals. The same 
graceful, timeless feel of the songs Kate digs out of dusty old books can be 
found in her own compositions. A casual listener would be hard-pressed to 
distinguish one from the other.

LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO: South Africa, 10 Members
It is Ladysmith Black Mambazo who represents the traditional culture of 
South Africa. They are regarded as South Africa's cultural emissaries at 
home and around the world.  "It isn't merely the grace and power of their 
dancing or the beauty of their singing that rivets the attention, but the 
sheer joy and love that emanates from their being," says Paul Simon.

LAGBAJA:  Nigeria, Afrobeat Jazz, 14 members
Masked Afrobeat Jazz sensation direct from Nigeria.  Widely considered to be 
one of Africa's most exciting and engaging contemporary artists, Lagbaja is 
the current rage back home in Lagos.  Lagbaja's new CD will be released by 
Mi5 Recordings later this Summer.

LENINE: Brazil, 4 Members
With his husky voice, unique style of guitar playing and his irresistible 
blend of Brazilian Popular Music, rock, and traditional music, Lenine is 
considered the standard bearer of the Brazilian music scene for the 21st 
century.  In the past year, Lenine has won two Latin Grammys and virtually 
swept Brazil's annual music awards, winning "Best CD," "Best Male Vocalist" 
and "Best Song".

MALOUMA: Mauritania, 10 members
Malouma is considered one of Mauritanias greatest cultural treasures, a 
hard-won accolade for this singer from Trarza. Daughter of a griot, she has 
taken traditional material and reinvented it, incorporating such influences 
as blues and gospel from the western world. Her fearlessness to write about 
taboo subjects including social justice issues, AIDS, and the equality of 
women challenged the status quo; her musical talents prevailed and she is 
now recognized as a star. Two previous releases met with critical success  
she is now set to tour in Spring 2008 in celebration of her third release.

MARY BLACK: Ireland, 6 Members
A living legend in her homeland of Ireland, Mary Black has long held the 
attention of followers of Irish music as one of the finest vocalists in the

has a proprietary way with material wearing it like a second skin, investing 
it with the breath of life and total conviction.  Heartfelt and

MUSAFIR: Rajasthan, India, 8 members
MUSAFIR combines Rajasthani rural folk music with influences from Qawwali 
(Muslim devotional music), Indian film music, Arab popular music, and 
Hindustani (North Indian Classical) music. Musafir (traveler in Farsi) has 
dazzled European audiences in recent years with its energetic hybrid 
versions of Indian folk and popular music, acrobatics, and feats of physical 
endurance. They have performed to enthusiastic crowds at hundreds of 
concerts and festivals all over Europe, including WOMAD, Roskilde, Paleo, 
Sfinks, and Ritmos.

NADIA DIEUDONNE & FEET OF RHYTHM: Haiti, Folk/Traditional, 10 members
Nadia Dieudonne & Feet of Rhythm is an Afro-Haitian folkloric dance company 
created to preserve and promote the rich culture of Haiti. Since 1994, the 
nonprofit group has personified Haitian pride by performing at cultural 
events worldwide including the Wasshoi International Dance & Music festival 
in Saki, Japan; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Prospect Bark-Bandshell; Bryant 
Park; The African Heritage Guggenheim Festival; Dance Theater Workshop/NYC; 
and Lincoln Center-Out of Doors. Feet of Rhythm specializes in theater, 
concert, festival, and band performances and is capable of presenting 
Haitian folklore tales in a theatrical manner. Each choreo-drama reflects 
traditional Vodou dances fused with unique contemporary Dieudonne movements.

NIYAZ: Iran/India/US, 5 members
Vas vocalist Azam Ali, Axiom of Choice's multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin 
Torkian, and producer/remixer Carmen Rizzo have joined forces to create a 
globe-spanning sound that they call "world music for the 21st century." 
Niyaz fuse Persian, Turkish, Kurdish and Indian musical traditions with 
electronic dance rhythms, and they set Urdu poetry and the 13th century 
verse of Sufi poet Rumi to a swirling, hypnotic beat. Find out what the 
fuss is all about.

OJOS DE BRUJO: Spain, 10 Members
Awarded the title of Best European World Music Artist by the BBC, and with 
a gold record in their native Spain, Ojos de Brujo is leaving their mark all 
over the globe. By taking all of the romantic and percussive elements of 
traditional Flamenco music and symbiotically melding it with a free mix of 
more contemporary musical styles including hip-hop, folk, Latin, funk and 
rock, the Barcelona band has shaken up the world music scene with their own 
genre-hybrid. Six Degrees Records released their new record, Techarm, in 
North America on October 31, 2006.

OLIVER MTUKUDZI & BLACK SPIRITS:  Zimbabwe, Afropop "Tuku" Music, 9 members
Afropop giant from Zimbabwe.  The annual tours of Oliver and his Black 
Spirits ensemble have proven to be the highlight of many festival and 
performing arts seasons.   He returns to North America promoting his new CD 
in Fall 2007.

salsa is an Afro-Caribbean dance party not to be missed.  His new CD 
"Isabella" will be released in March 2007 and Ricardo will tour all

worldwide following. "[Vusi] was a voice during the revolution, a voice of

YAMANDU COSTA: Brazil, 3 members
Until the age of fifteen, Yamandz Costas only music school was the folk 
music from the south of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.  By the age of 
seventeen, he had played for the first time in Sco Paulo in an event 
produced by the Tom Brazil studio, and from then on he was recognized as one 
of the most gifted guitar players of Brazil. This young guitarist, with his 
7-string guitar, is now a sensation in Brazil, and this tour will be his 
first to the US.

Malis bluesman Ali Farka Touri has passed the torch onto his son Vieux 
Farka Touri, whose self-titled first album features the final studio 
recordings of his father before his death in March 2006. The album, which 
also features kora-player Toumani Diabati, draws heavily on the same 
blues-inflected North African desert traditions that Ali Farka Touri made 
famous. Vieuxs debut pays musical homage to his fathers roots with 
familiar trancey guitar-work while incorporating new musical influences from 
reggae to rock.

TINARIWEN Aman Iman: Water is Life
Even if you do not know the story of Tinariwen, the Tuareg
