Bill Bragin bbragin at publictheater.org
Fri Dec 14 17:17:32 AST 2007

Hi friends,

For those of you coming in to NYC for Chamber Music America and or APAP,
I wanted to send you a list of shows taking place at Joe's Pub during
that period. Below are descriptions and links to artist websites. In
general, please contact artist agents for comps to any of these shows.
We are strictly limited for most of them. As you know, I won't be
working at Joe's Pub anymore by the time APAP comes around, but I plan
on being at many of the shows listed below. Weaning will be a slow
process, and I love many of these artists. Hope to see some of you
there.

	All the best,
	Bill

LJOVA + THE VJOLA CONTRABAND / BROOKLYN RIDER
	http://www.ljova.com/ <http://www.ljova.com/>
The members of Brooklyn Rider have come together to form a
string quartet that involves creative programming and exciting
collaborations to illuminate music in new ways and invite audiences into
a greater shared dialogue. Individually, they have appeared as soloists
with major symphony orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the
Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony, and have taken part in
many of the leading chamber music festivals in the United States and
abroad. As educators, they have had affiliations with such institutions
as Princeton University, Harvard University, Rhode Island School of
Design and Williams College. They have also been honored by an Avery
Fisher Career Grant, the Kreisler Competition, the Menuhin competition,
the Arts Recognition and Talent Search and the American String Teachers
Association. They have worked extensively with composers such as Chen
Yi, Osvaldo Golijov, Dimitry Yanov-Yanovsky, Wu Man, Shirish Korde and
Kayhan Kalhor and have collaborated with such diverse figures as
violinist Jenny Scheinman, singer songwriter Christina Courtin, and
visual artist Kevork Mourad. Last November, Brooklyn Rider helped to
curate a week-long residency at National Public Radio's Performance
Today. Much of Brooklyn Rider's desire to extend the borders of
conventional string quartet programming has been through their
involvement with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble. As members of the
ensemble, they have performed throughout the world, recorded two albums
for Sony Classical, and have reached audiences through a series of
educational initiatives, family concerts and media broadcasts.

Ljova and the Vjola Contraband is chamber-jam music for the
"remix generation". As if by alchemy, Eastern-European and Gypsy
melodies, Latin rhythms, Jazz-inspired improvisations, and deeply rooted
Classical forms are given new meanings. Founded by the maverick film
composer, arranger, and violist Lev 'LJOVA' Zhurbin --- hailed by
Billboard magazine as "one of New York's fastest rising composers and
instrumentalists" -- the ensemble also features his close collaborators
on vocals, accordion, bass and percussion. Inspired by his
collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Osvaldo Golijov, the Kronos Quartet, the
rapper Jay-Z and others, Ljova's compositions dazzle with intricate
textures, odd rhythms and lilting melodies, creating music that is both
fresh and timeless. Since its founding in summer 2006, the band has
performed the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York's Museum of Modern
Art, the Philadelphia Art Museum, as well as several appearances at
Joe's Pub and Barbes. Their debut CD is slated for release in the summer
of 2008.

THE LISPS - Country Doctor Museum CD Release
	http://thelisps.com/ <http://thelisps.com/>
"Local coed pop group the Lisps gives quirky indie rock a real
good name. Their debut self-released EP, The Vain, the Modest, and the
Dead, is smart-assed and danceable, but with an affecting core of
been-around-the-block melancholy."
	- Time Out NY
The Lisps are a New York-based assemblage of 21st century
post-rock n' vaudeville auteurs. They write songs about science and
love, destiny, piety, babies and documents. The Lisps are the
public/performative version of all the relationships you're struggling
with. This performance is the release party for "Country Doctor Museum"

	OLD SPRINGS PIKE
	http://www.oldspringspike.com/ <http://www.oldspringspike.com/>
Old Springs Pike blends the cricket chirp of a suburban
slow-fade with the subway scream of metropolitan mayhem. Using four part
harmony as a diving board, these early twenty-somethings find themselves
in stylistic depths ranging from a fair-paced folk to a rarely
restrained roots rock. With an energetic, spontaneous live act, Old
Springs Pike proves that it's not just a concert, but an event. MTV's
John Norris recommends Old Springs Pike as "a cool, punky folk band".
The group uses four-part harmony as a diving board for their
indie-acoustic rock sound, adding country and folk stylings into the mix
for a sound that's as original as it is exhilarating.

	BASIA BULAT / JEFFREY LEWIS
	http://www.basiabulat.com/ <http://www.basiabulat.com/>
	http://www.thejeffreylewissite.com/
<http://www.thejeffreylewissite.com/>
Basia Bulat hails from the forest city of London, Ontario, where
she found her songs and stories dangling from the trees. Her debut album
Oh, My Darling was engineered and produced by Howard Bilerman (Godspeed
You! Black Emperor, The Arcade Fire), and will be released on Rough
Trade Records with an unreleased extra track. Basias songs are infused
with sweet ragtime piano melodies, tender-hearted string arrangements,
and a voice that has been compared to Elyse Weinberg and Leslie Feist
(she was on the road with The Veils as a background vocalist.) Together
with her backing band, Basia has begun bringing her unique blend of folk
and chamber pop to audiences across Canada.

The new album by Jeffrey Lewis is a collection of songs by the
legendary anarchist punk band Crass, reworked by Jeffrey into glorious
folk, rock, psychedelic, orchestral and electronica productions. Lewis
was raised on New York City's Lower East Side and is a maker of comic
books, tragi-comic folk narratives, and lysergic garage rock. For the
recording of 12 Crass Songs Lewis was joined by Helen Schreiner on back
up vocals. Playing live with his brother Jack on bass, David Beauchamp
on drums, The Jeffrey Lewis Band mixes 60s acoustic psychedelia like
Pearls Before Swine with the experimental art-punk of the Fall and the
urban lyricism of Lou Reed, sounding a bit like if Woody Guthrie fronted
Sonic Youth. 12 Crass Songs follows in the footsteps of the critically
acclaimed Jeffrey & Jack Lewis: City & Eastern Songs, which was produced
by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Butthole Surfers, Low, Daniel Johnston, etc) and
was selected as one of 2006's best albums in Time Out NY, the Boston
Globe, CMJ Monthly and elsewhere. Jeffrey's most recent comic book
series Fuff is currently up to issue five. 7:00pm, $12

"The gutter-poet balladry, feats of acrobatic derring-do,
stacked vocal loops, and cracked cabaret singing of Sxip's Hour of Charm
might seem to be a crazy-quilt combination. But circus composer Sxip
Shirey, it seems, likes his quilts rather crazy indeed...(It can be)
argued that if it warms the soul, it doesn't particularly matter whether
the pieces actually fit."
	-Marc Hirsh, Boston Globe
Real life circus composer Sxip Shirey presents a high powered
night of variety entertainment featuring New York City's best musical
artists, comedians and the indescribable. Featuring: New music by Sxip
Shirey utilizing regurgitated music boxes, human beat box and industrial
flutes. Kurt Braunohler and Kristin Schaal (Flight of the Condors) take
the stage, a surreal Burns and Allen. The powerful singing of Dayna
Kurtz will make you forget to breathe. You dont know it but you've seen
him in Spider Man 2, The Cell, The Grinch and Big Fish, contortionist
Johnathan Nosan does things with his body that are illegal in certain
states.

Our favorite comedian/story teller Greg Walloch is funny, sweet

Aceppella Champions VOCO who take on everything from Appalachian tunes

	ABIGAIL WASHBURN'S Sparrow Quartet
Featuring BELA FLECK, CASEY DRIESSEN and BEN SOLLEE
	http://www.abigailwashburn.com/
<http://www.abigailwashburn.com/>
"Abigail Washburn puts a new twist on Old Time. Hence, when
America's oldest music form played the world's oldest civilization, it
was in Chinese...Her unusual repertoire included compositions in Chinese
and English, plus traditional Chinese poems as nobody here has heard
them, put to the lively picking of banjo, guitar, stand-up bass and
fiddle. The results were eclectic and inspiring...Washburn is a daring,
definite talent, whose feel for the folk idiom results in moving
material. Soulful is the word. On stage, her voice resonated with the
power of a seasoned performer and her poetic hill tunes sounded all the
more evocative in Chinese."
	- Wall Street Journal
The bare-bones, rustic, and poignant sounds of singer/songwriter
and banjo player Abigail Washburn seem so genuine and natural they must
come from a person who grew up in love with and surrounded by folk and
bluegrass. On her latest album, 'Song of the Traveling Daughter'
(Nettwerk), Washburn's evocative vocals and clawhammer banjo style are
supported by Ben Sollee's cello, an instrument that brings a dark,
primeval feel to songs that sound like they're hundreds of years old,
along with fiddler Casey Driessen and producer Bela Fleck's national
steel guitar and banjo adding subtle grace notes to Washburn's timeless
tales. In addition to her growing acclaim as a solo artist, especially
for her unique fusion of Appalachian and Chinese folk traditions,
Washburn has made a name for herself as a member of the acclaimed
old-time string band Uncle Earl.

	HAALE with RUFUS CAPPADOCIA
	http://www.haale.com/ <http://www.haale.com/>
	http://www.rufusmusic.com/ <http://www.rufusmusic.com/>
"Percussionists provided driving rhythms...over which Haale's
warm, supple voice unfurled like a curlicue of smoke. Her band's
amplified rumble served as a reminder of the extent to which rock bands
like the Doors and the Velvet Underground turned to the East for their
hypnotic efforts; here their borrowings were reclaimed with interest."
	-The New York Times
Haale (pronounced like *hal*le**lu*jah) evokes both the
spiritual and traditional culture of her parents' homeland of Iran, and
the energy of psychedelic rock and roll from the sounds of New York
City, where she was born. Her music and her message are formed by the
powerful combination of these influences, invoking both a swaying trance
and a rock sensibility she describes as "Psychedelic Sufi Trance Rock."
Haale's debut recordings were released on her own DarYa Records in
January 2007 to critical acclaim. Popmatters called the EPs "a panoramic
blend of luscious rock, heady bass, and brilliantly produced rhythms"
and the College Music Journal lauded Haale's "totally original songs."
After seeing Haale at a club last fall, David Byrne invited her to be
part of his Nonesuch Records-sponsored "One Note" series at Carnegie
Hall. That show served to kick off a season of near continuous touring,
playing clubs, colleges, and festivals like South by Southwest in
Austin, Bonnaroo in Tennessee and the MIMI Festival in Marseilles,
France. Haale's debut full-length album is due out in March 2008.

Meet cellist Rufus Cappadocia, a multi-lingual musician,
performer, composer and recording artist of incredible range and
diversity. From the modalities of Middle Eastern, West African and
pan-European folk forms to blues, rock and jazz along the way, adding
elements American roots, Mediterranean textures, and Caribbean
percussion for good measure, Cappadocia's effortless and natural embrace
of all music is awe-inspiring. After many travels, Cappadocia landed in
NY and joined the multi-faceted jazz ensemble, The Paradox Trio, though
the nomadic artist was embraced by virtually every artist and musical
community he sought out, including such widely assorted musicians as
Celtic pioneer Seamus Eagan and master Haitian drummer "Bonga"
Jean-Baptiste with the Voodoo Drums of Haiti; musical polymath Ross
Daly, who was instrumental in introducing Cappadocia to Middle Eastern
and Balkan music; Vishal Vaid, a virtuoso Indian Ghazal vocalist and
guitarist David Fiuczynski, with whom he formed the Eastern Modal fusion

"Earl Dax's Weimar New York slices cabaret with cutting-edge
performance."
	- Time Out, New York
After a sold-out summer season at the Spiegeltent, "Weimar New
York" returns home to Joe's Pub to offer it's signature blend of
performance art, music and burlesque with an eye on election year
politics. Fresh from headlining Carnegie Hall as one half of Kiki and
Herb, Justin Bond presides over an evening that spans the gamut from the
trenchant observations of legendary performance artist Penny Arcade to
the sophisticated stylings of German cabaret performer Daniel Isengart.
The mischievous Pixie Harlots provide a dose of gender-bending glamor,
and with great pleasure we welcome the prodigiously talented Novice
Theory to the community of "Weimar New York" artists.
Juxtaposing the aesthetic and music of "Weimar-era Berlin" with
that of the contemporary downtown performance scene in New York, Weimar
New York also spotlights the uneasy parallels between the rise of
fascistic and nationalistic elements in Weimar Germany and the
unprecedented growth of reactionary policies and religious extremism
today. In so doing Weimar New York is, according to the Village Voice,
"keeping the Weimar-era spirit of cultural resistance alive."

"After listening to a continuous stream of releases by purported
rising jazz singers - who couldn't have lasted through a chorus in a
contest with Ella Fitzgerald or Betty Carter - it's a delight to hear
the real thing in Catherine Russell... at the center of gravity that has
always kept the music alive is 'the groove' that Cat Russell embodies."
-Nat Hentoff, The Wall Street Journal
Catherine Russell is that rarest of entities -- an
honest-to-goodness, genuine jazz singer. In a field where any vocalist
who attempts the classic canon is granted that sobriquet as a matter of
course, she stands out like a diamond among rhinestones. Ms. Russell's
voice is full-blown femininity incarnate, a dusky, stalwart and soulful
instrument that radiates interpretive power yet remains touchingly
vulnerable. A native New Yorker, Catherine has an enviable jazz
pedigree. The daughter of jazz legends, Luis Russell (long-time musical
director/arranger for Louis Armstrong) and bassist/vocalist Carline Ray.
Not surprisingly, considering her roots, Catherine is a one of a kind
vocalist.

"...belongs to an era when music was not something to be sold
but something from the soul."
	Jeff Tamarkin, All Music Guide
Think of traditional African-American music, and the genres that
come to mind are gospel, blues and jazz; few people think of old-time
string band music. But the antebellum combination of banjo and fiddle
used to be a tradition in most black rural communities in the South. The
Carolina Chocolate Drops, a band of three young and talented musicians,
are recognized as leading the revival of this venerable musical
tradition. The Carolina Chocolate Drops honed their skills under the
tutelage of octogenarian fiddler Joe Thompson, a North Carolinian said
to be the last black traditional string band player. Thompson, who grew
up playing at barn dances, "frolics" and corn shuckings, wound up
performing in venues across the country, including Carnegie Hall. Dom
Flemons' guitar and jug root the band in an infectious rhythm, and he
plays harmonica for additional melody. Banjo and fiddle player Rhiannon
Giddens became inspired by old-time music when she fell into contra
dancing after graduating from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Justin
Robinson is the band's primary fiddler. Trained in classical violin, he
became interested in bluegrass and old-time fiddle music, as well as the
fife and drumtradition of African-Americans in the Deep South.

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn, no longer able to stay a well-kept
regional secret, has been at the heart of the vibrant Northwest
independent music scene ever since the 2000 debut of her insta-classic
album 'You Think It's Like This But Really It's Like This', on which she
collaborated with Phil Elverum of The Microphones/Mt. Eerie. Her albums
are an exploration of the territories beyond lo-fi, aiming to transcend
mere technical limitations and to push the boundaries of 'indie-rock'
towards a more meaningful communicative goal. There's a kind of
deceptive simplicity to both Mirah's music and the lyrical content that
upon closer listening yields to reveal a provocative and sensual
complexity. Mirah's newest work, which will be showcased tonight, is
again a collaboration with Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson. A multi-media
performance based on the tender and triumphant lives of insects, 'Share
This Place' is a song cycle which accompanies 50 minutes of luminous and
endearing stop-motion animation created by Seattle animator Britta
Johnson.

San Francisco native Holcombe Waller is an independent artist
now living in Portland, Oregon. Holcombe's unearthly voice harkens back
to Donovan or a young Chris de Burgh, but truth be told, Holcombe's
latest album "Troubled Times" (Napoleon Records) is evocative of a
musical union between The Judybats and Chan Marshall, with subtle homage
to the tender, down-and-out stylings of Americana-punk balladeer Gillian

of a single composer or a single far-afield idiom and feeding it back
through a new sensibility. Liking Brooklyn Qawwali Party doesn't depend
on if you know what Qawwali is. (It's ancient Sufi devotional music from
the Indian subcontinent; each piece is long and heavily rhythmic,
working up to climax after climax.) Nor does it depend on how you feel
about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, its most revered practitioner. BQP piles
texture into Mr. Khan's melodies, ultimately transforming them; it's
joyous music, and this band adds all the extra fun and funk it knows." -
Ben Ratliff, The New York Times
"...like somehow Pakistan met Brooklyn in the Nigerian compound
of the late Fela Kuti..." - John Schaefer of National Public Radio/WNYC
Paying tribute to one of the world's great vocalists, Brooklyn
Qawwali Party formed to honor the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,
reworking his thunderous songs for an eclectic, eleven-piece orchestra
comprised of groundbreaking jazz musicians. Funky, smart, and loving,
BQP captures the joyful spirit of this Pakistani folk music in a unique
instrumental blend of jazz and Qawwali. With five horns, guitar, bass,
harmonium, and three percussionists, this band's buoyant rhythm will be
sure to get you on your feet and clapping. After selling out Joe's this
past February, BQP is excited to return to the Pub.

	RALPH'S WORLD Family Matinee
	http://www.ralphsworld.com/ <http://www.ralphsworld.com/>
Ralph's World, the creation of indie rocker and songwriter Ralph
Covert, is a mega-fun musical planet rocketing through the Disney
universe.
We all know Ralph Covert as the high-energy front-man of his
Chicago-based band, The Bad Examples. Ralph toured internationally
behind a half-dozen records released since 1991 and scored radio hits
both in the States and abroad - most notably "Not Dead Yet" which was
contemporaneously covered by Styx. Then with the birth of his daughter,
Ralph went in a new direction. Covert and the four-man rock n'roll
Ralph's World band have brought their innovative "kindie rock" to venues
across the country on their coast-to-coast House of Blues tour. Covert
utlilizes the same enthusiasm and super-melodic approach in his
children's music - only the lyrics are changed for the ears of the
innocent! His McCartneyesque style has won over hundreds of thousands of
four-feet-and-under fans and their parents. The live Ralph's World band
is anchored by Ralph's longtime lead guitarist Tom O'Brien, Brian
Sheridan of Middle 8, and Michael Alban, formerly of Jonasay. The
touring band's infectious camaraderie adds to the revival atmosphere,
where thousands of young voices shout along and dance with reckless
abandon.

	RYAN SHAW / SIMONE
	http://www.thisisryanshaw.com/ <http://www.thisisryanshaw.com/>
Ryan Shaw is a man with a mission. This 26-year-old
singer/songwriter from Decatur, Georgia is out to revive the passion and
soul of the Golden Age of Rhythm & Blues (1960-1972) for a new
generation. His debut album, This Is Ryan Shaw, combines a powerfully
expressive voice with a clutch of great songs both classic and new-and a
state-of-the-art, in-your-face sound that makes it impossible to sit
still.

She is her own woman, a singer, songwriter and performer whose
ability to transcend genres echoes the tradition of her mother, musical
icon and pioneer Nina Simone. Blessed with a rich vocal range, an innate
skill for lyrical interpretation and a soul-deep understanding of music
as a means of healing, empowerment and celebration, Simone is very much
her mother's daughter, she is most assuredly a multi-talented artist in
her own right.

URBAN TAP featuring TAMANGO and CHARLIE HUNTER
	http://www.urbantap.net/
	http://www.charliehunter.com/
Tap master Tamango and maverick jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter -
rhythm artists without boundaries -- begin a new collaboration after
busking together in the streets of Europe two decades ago. It is a story
seeded then and crossing paths now. Comments The New York Times of
Tamango, "Astonishing elegance and virtuosity...One is tempted to call
him the best dancer of any kind around." and of Hunter, "...a
groove-minded guitarist known for his distinctly ambidextrous
technique...Mr. Hunter is a homespun marvel, soloing pithily over his
own bass lines and chordal midrange."

	KT TUNSTALL
	http://www.kttunstall.com/ <http://www.kttunstall.com/>
KT Tunstall is a sparkling songwriter with Chinese blood, a
Scottish heart, great legwarmers and a cool name. KT celebrates classic
singer-songwriting in the tradition of Rikki Lee Jones, Carole King and
Fleetwood Mac with an articulate, accessible, immediate brew of rootsy
sass, wistful quandary and after-hours atmosphere. The latest in a line
of outstanding contemporary Scottish songwriters, KT's unique
perspective offers a rare emotionally connecting intensity through it's
gripping lyrical bite and heartfelt melody.
Tunstall broke into the public eye with a performance on Later
with Jools Holland of her song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree". Her
debut album, Eye to the Telescope, was released in late 2004. Tunstall's
style of music varies from folk to pop. Tunstall's second album, the
recently released Drastic Fantastic, premiered on September 3, 2007 in
Scotland, followed a week later on September 10, 2007 with the London
release for the UK and September 18, 2007, in the US. In its first week,
Drastic Fantastic reached #1 on the Scottish Album Charts. She's been
compared the "Rock-likes" of PJ Harvey and Patty Smith and the
"funk-folk-likes" of Suzanne Vega and Ani Difranco. Either way, fans of
each would appreciate Tunstall's work.
