[FA Worldmusic] terminology

I took a few virtual CDs with me on vacation last month. Here are three
which I have been hitting the play button on for the past month...

1. Si Para Usted, various unearthed tracks from EGREM, some psyche,
some funk, all performed by massively talented players
2. La Gran Fuga, Willie Colon (dig that opening track with the West
African gong gong!)
3. Dub Qawalli, Gaudi, a very respectful ode to Nusrat (RIP today ten
years ago)

Saw Gilberto Gil earlier this summer in New Bedford, Mass, the
unofficial capital in the US of the lusophone world: the lovely
pre-depression Zeiterion Theater was packed with Brazilians, Cape
Verdeans, and Portuguese. Gil just spoke and sang to the hall, and many
people were singing along so joyously, you could barely hear Gil at
times.

And next week, can't wait to see the Budos Band from Staten Island at
the MFA here in Boston. They were at sxsw and are just a funky fun
ensemble that makes everyone in the room feel cool as a cucumber.

As to that pesky little issue of how to judge music: you don't judge
music. Music judges you, as Bob Brozman said in an interview some years
ago. We humans have this thing called a brain, which is basically a
bucket of sodium chloride. Sound waves pass across the bucket, and
sometimes the waves will create pleasing ripples in the bucket of NaCl.
Other times, the ripples are non-existent, they're flat. Sometimes they
creates swells that crash down. Other times, the waves come from far
far away, resulting in primo large tubes. Whatever. I'm rambling now.

I think there are two topics floating underneath here....

Dmitri's original one about strategies to bridge audiences..

And Ian's....what are people listening to, who have you seen recently
and are excited about? (or the corollary...which emperor has no
clothes.....)

Anyone?

All the best,
Bill Bragin

Not that I want to extend this particular discussion, but I think the
veterans on the list should also respect the fact that a lot of the
folks piping up this time around were not on the list for previous
annual "what is world music" "'world music' sucks" discussions. In other
words, there is a revolving door and, if anything, it may be a sign that
we have newcomers among us... and that's a good thing. Also, ain't it
good that FA World is back in use as a discussion forum rather than just
the occasional canned message?

So, fed up veterans... propose another topic?

Much respect,

===> Dmitri!
