A new exploration of the pleasures of pure pop: one of the great voices of
our time, one of our most respected contemporary songwriters and a jazz trio
that re-imagines Outkast and The Clash as modern cabaret.

Lesley Gore burst onto the music scene in 1963 when her first single, "It's My
Party," produced by Quincy Jones, became a number one hit. She is known as the
most commercially successful solo artist of the Girl Group era of the 1960s.
Her first hit was followed by "Judy's Turn to Cry" and the proto-feminist "You
Don't Own Me." In 2005, she recorded her first album of new material since
1976, entitled Ever Since. The album is a current and relevant collection of
choice songs sung by an iconic, timeless singer whose voice has matured and
richened in a most delicious way. Smoky, quiet, focused, simple and
beautifully lethal with a pin spotlight on one of the most undeniable voices
of our time.

A remarkable songwriter, Jill Sobule sings smart, funny and poignant pop songs
that transcend being merely witty and clever to strike deep emotional chords,
set to irresistible, well-crafted melodies, including the 1995 hit "I Kissed a
Girl," and for "Supermodel" from the soundtrack of the hit 1995 film Clueless.
Her insightful songwriting and strong guitar work have made her a favorite
among musicians like Lloyd Cole (with whom she played in The Negatives), Don
Henley, Warren Zevon and others, and her latest Underdog, Victorious, has
gotten rave reviews.

The New Standards is a minimalist trio composed of John Munson (of Semisonic
and Trip Shakespeare) on bass/vocals, Chan Poling (of The Suburbs) on
piano/vocals and Steve Roehm on vibraphones. The New Standards bring a novel
approach to a fresh book of classics, classics determined entirely by
themselves, from Outkast's "Hey Ya" to "London Calling" by The Clash. The New
Standards performances deliver these fresh musical insights by freely mixing
organic instrumentation, a traditional jazzy feel and visceral, rock
performance. In October of 2005, the band released a self-titled album
produced by another member of Semisonic, Grammy. Award-winning Dan Wilson,
with a follow-up album scheduled for release this fall.

Brilliant American songwriters are the order of the day as Grammy-winning folk
artist Patty Griffin, New Orleans icon Allen Toussaint and a collective of
Nashville's best composers and songwriters invite the Big Apple in for some
country cooking and musical soul food.

Patty Griffin has twice been nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk
Album. Griffin's songs have been covered by artists such as Bette Midler,
Reba McEntire, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, among others. Artists such as Lisa
Germano, Emmylou Harris, and Buddy & Julie Miller joined Griffin for the
recording of her fourth album, Impossible Dream, which came out in April 2004.
This year she released her latest album, Children Running Through, which was
also co-arranged and produced by Mike McCarthy of Spoon. A musical based on
her songs, 10 Million Miles, is currently appearing off-Broadway.

Allen Toussaint is an American musician, songwriter, record producer,
Rock-and-Roll Hall-of-Famer, and one of the most influential figures in New
Orleans R&B. He has been making hit records for over 40 years and has been
covered by and/or performed with the Pointer Sisters, Bonnie Raitt, Otis
Redding, Paul Simon, Chet Atkins, and Lenny Kravitz, among others. The River
in Reverse, Toussaint's collaborative album with Elvis Costello, was released
in May 2006 at a premiere in Joe's Pub. The album received a Grammy.
nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album.

The Country Music Association (CMA) has been holding its Songwriter Series
songwriter circles at Joe's Pub since 2005, hosted by Music Row hitmaker and
raconteur Bob DiPiero. The Songwriter Series offers a rare opportunity to
bring some of Nashville's best known performers and most acclaimed writers and
composers to the New York stage. Past guests at the Songwriter Series at
Joe's Pub include Kix Brooks of Brooks and Dunn, Rives Rutherford, Chely
Wright, Keith Anderson and Brett James. Tonight's show features Bob Di Piero,
Rivers Rutherford, Victoria Shaw and another songwriter TBA

Women of the world unite and sing in this intimate international
singer/songwriter summit featuring Italian pop star Carmen Consoli, acclaimed
Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza and New York's own Morley.

Carmen Consoli is a Sicilian-born singer-songwriter, whose innovative mix of
indie-rock influences, bossa nova rhythms and jazz and blues-inspired riffs
have engendered a sound unique on the Italian music scene.. She has released
10 albums, and for the past decade has reigned as Italy's leading female rock
star. Her albums sell in the millions and she has been a multiple honoree at
the MTV Italy Music Awards. Her most recent album, Eva Contro Eva, shot to
number one on the Italian pop charts when it was released in May 2006. Carmen
is known for her unflinching emotional live performance of songs that examine
broad themes of love, illness, solitude and friendship from a feminine -- and
feminist -- perspective.

Singer - songwriter Morley is soulful, sensual and down-to-earth. Her songs
have a conscious pop, urban international bent that attract a following as
diverse as her influences. Reflective of her diverse influences as a poet,
dancer, choreographer, and singer, her voice and music are a distinctive
hybrid of a range of artists from Roberta Flack to Sade to Annie Lennox to
Joni Mitchell, with a sound that is all her own. Sensuality, soul, intellect,
and relevance are qualities she shares with these artists, and Morley carries
on their legacy of writing and performing music from the heart (and mind) for
the heart and mind in a sound that is all her own. Recently licensed to
Universal France and just released in the US on Circular Moves, Days Like
These has earned stellar reviews from Rolling Stone, Vibrations, and Musiq
magazines, leading to concerts with superstars Amadou et Mariam, Simply Red
and Raul Midon.

Luciana Souza, who hails from Brazil, is acclaimed for her marvelous emotional
range as a singer, delivering delicate ballads, improvising beautifully
crafted solos, and singing wordless improvisations with the instrumentalists -
collecting a variety of voices into one distinct and unique voice. Nominated
three times for a Grammy. for Best Jazz Vocalist in 2002, 2003 and 2005, she
was awarded 2005 Female Singer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists
Association. Souza's newest album, The New Bossa Nova, will be released on
August 21, 2007 and includes interpretations of songs by such legends as Joni
Mitchell and Steely Dan.

*    BEIRUT
*    BALKAN BEAT BOX
*    THE NY GYPSY ALL-STARS

 <http://joespub.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=DX_c7AGhAF7-----AAFNzg>

Presented in association with The NY Gypsy Festival
7 PM, $25 for general public / $20 for Public Theater members

Indie pop and global sounds collide with a bang! Don't miss the fireworks as
underground sensations Beirut, raucous multidisciplinary party band Balkan
Beat Box and the world-class instrumentalists of the NY Gypsy All-Stars storm
Central Park, presented in association with the NY Gypsy Festival.

Beirut, the 2006 project of musical prodigy, singer and multi-instrumentalist
Zach Condon, debuted with the guitar-less Gulag Orkestar. One of 2006's most
unexpected indie success stories, Beirut combines horns, violins, cellos,
ukuleles, mandolins, glockenspiels, drums, tambourines, congas, organs,
pianos, clarinets and accordions (no guitars!) to build and break the melodies
under Condon's deep-voiced crooner vocals, swaying to the Eastern European
beats like a drunken 12-member ensemble that has fallen in love with The
Magnetic Fields, Talking Heads and Neutral Milk Hotel. The debut gathered
critical approbation that quickly moved from the smallest blogs to mainstream
media outlets that pegged Condon as a one-man cross between Jeff Mangum, Conor
Oberst, and Sufjan Stevens. The follow-up EP Lon Gisland, was released this
year.

The members of Balkan Beat Box do not believe in flags, nationalities, or
borders. Jewish, Balkan, Arabic, European, Moroccan, and American influences
are united by hip hop beats and dancehall toasts. Founding members Tamir
Muskat and Ori Kaplan have been active for a decade in NYC's premier
underground bands. In Balkan Beat Box, they bring together folk traditions
with electronic beats, with a rotating cast of players and guests including
the Bulgarian Chicks, Itamar Ziegler, Jeremiah Lockwood, gnawa player Hasan
Ben Nafar, and Israeli MC Tomer Yosef. Their latest album, Nu Med, released
on JDub Records this year, was praised by SPIN as "a global peacekeeping
mission that you can dance to."

The NY Gypsy All-Stars, featuring the acclaimed young Macedonian / Turkish
clarinet virtuoso Ismail Lumanovski, Tamer Pinarbasi on kunun, Panogiotis
Andreu from Greece on bass; Seido Salifoski from Macedonia on
percussion/darbouka, and Jordan Pearlman from Philadelphia on drums performing
jazz-inflected takes on Turkish, Balkan and Mediterranean Romani (Gypsy)
songs. The group is the brainchild of Serdar Ilhan, producer of The NY Gypsy
Festival, and offers a broad perspective on various styles of Gypsy music and
dance against the backdrop of New York City which, being the crossroads of
many cultures, is essentially Gypsy at heart.

*    MICHELLE SHOCKED
* TOSHI REAGON and BIGLovely: Sacred Music Project
*    JOHN BOUTTE
 <http://joespub.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=DX_c7AGhAFj-----AAFNzg>

7 PM, FREE tickets distributed on day of show

A trio of powerful voices and heavenly sounds from three gospel influenced
musicians: the Texan songwriter Michelle Shocked, rock/folk/funk vocalist
Toshi Reagon and the Creole soul of John Boutti.

Michelle Shocked is a traveler and a troubadour; a 'picker-poet,' as they say
in Texas, whose bold creativity and adventurous musical style mark her as a
true American original. Her musical career was ignited by a bootleg recording
made around a Kerrville Folk Festival campfire on a Sony Walkman. Released as
The Texas Campfire Tapes in England without Shocked's authority, its success
abroad enticed Mercury Records to offer Shocked a recording contract, leading
to a trilogy of albums that stand as a captivating primer on American music.
Short Sharp Shocked's spirited folk-rock progressed into Captain Swing's
energetic jump blues, expanding to Arkansas Traveler's travelogue of
minstrel-era country. Shocked launched her own label, Mighty Sound, in 2001.
2005 saw her simultaneously releasing another trilogy: the roots-rocking
'divorce album' Don't Ask, Don't Tell, a Disneyfied western swing set Got No
Strings and the Latin/blues blast Mexican Standoff; her new album
ToHeavenYouRide showcases Michelle's affinity with traditional gospel and
bluegrass.

Toshi Reagon calls to mind classic R&B artists, like Stevie Wonder or Prince,
and old school rock groups like Led Zeppelin. Despite (or because of) her
genre-bending, Reagon fits comfortably on a stage with any of the Lilith
artists, at Carnegie Hall, or in a dirty rock club. Of her innovative rock
crossed with gospel and soul-influenced, blues-tinged folk, Interview magazine
raved, "Anyone who thinks rock is a dead medium need only listen to the music
of Toshi Reagon and her almighty band BIGLovely." Toshi's Sacred Music
Project performances have become a beloved recent addition to her annual
birthday celebrations at Joe's Pub. Inspiring audiences to clap their hands,
stomp their feet and pray to the good Lord that the music keeps playing.

Growing up in New Orleans, where he is considered to be one of the finest
vocalists living in the city today, soul artist John Boutti was exposed to
music as part of the city's daily life. From his Creole family's home, not far
from where he lives today in the French Quarter, he could easily hear the
music of weddings and funerals coming from the church out back. At a different
time of year, the music of Carnival days and Mardi Gras was prevalent.
Stationed with the Army in Texas, Virginia, and Korea, he sang for and
directed gospel choirs. In addition to his solo recordings, he has contributed
vocals to an album called Mardi Gras Mambo from Cubanismo, a dance band from
Havana.

* 20th Century Boy: Marc Bolan and T.Rex 30th Anniversary Celebration
* DAVID DRIVER Sings The Scott Walker Songbook
* JUSTIN BOND is Close to You

 <http://joespub.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=DX_c7AGhAFn-----AAFNzg>

7 PM, $40 for general public / $35 for Public Theater members

An evening of tribute to three great musicians as David Driver performs the
work of Scott Walker, Tony nominated performer Justin Bond recreates The
Carpenters' Close to You album and an all-star collective commemorates the
memory of T. Rex leader Marc Bolan.

Marking the sixtieth anniversary of Marc Bolan's birth and the thirtieth of
his passing, this one night only event will showcase songs from Tyrannosaurus
Rex through all the T. Rex favorites, including gems from the seminal Electric
Warrior and The Slider and hit singles like "Ride A White Swan", "Jeepster",
"Hot Love", "Children of The Revolution", "Telegram Sam", "20th Century Boy"
and of course, "Get It On (Bang A Gong." A stellar group of musicians
including Clem Burke (Blondie/drums); James Mastro (Ian Hunter/guitar); Tony
Shanahan (Patti Smith Group/bass) and Tish & Snooky (Manic Panic/backing
vocals) will back a glittering array of special guest singers to be announced
shortly. The night will be hosted by NYC musicians, Joe's Pub regulars, and
life-long T.Rex fans, Joe Hurley (Rogue's March/The Gents) and Edward Rogers.
Special guest vocalists TBA.

David Driver sings the songs of Scott Walker, easily the most respected and
least known artist of his generation. Walker, the enigmatic and influential
subject of the soon-to-be-released documentary film 30 Century Man, is ripe
for re-discovery and downtown chanteur David Driver (seen alongside Deborah
Harry and Elvis Costello in Roy Nathanson's Fire at Keaton's Bar and Grill,
and as a regular vocalist with the Losers' Lounge) is the singer for the job.
Walker's gritty glam lyrics, passionate crooning and Dada arrangements are
late-twentieth-century music's road not taken; the streetwise luster and
gravity of Driver's voice make him uniquely qualified to resurrect these urban
song-scapes. Strewn with glitter and refuse, the Scott Walker songbook is at
once dark and ecstatic, sordid and innocent, deconstructive and deeply
conventional. The songbook includes the classics "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine
Anymore," "Montague Terrace (In Blue)," "It's Raining Today," and the
inimitable "Thanks for Chicago, Mr. James."

Tony Award nominated performance artist Justin Bond interprets The Carpenters
classic 1970 album Close to You. Set against the glorious backdrop of a late
September Central Park sunset, Justin (star of the controversial film Shortbus
and the Kiki half of the legendary downtown duo Kiki and Herb) will bring this
early concept album to life in its entirety. Follow a musical journey that
dawns with the innocence of "We've Only Just Begun", continues with "Love is
Surrender", the Beatles' "Help", Burt Bachrach's "(They Long to Be) Close to
You" and comes to a strange, psychedelic end with the savagely dark
disillusionment of "Another Song." From sun up to sun down, this song cycle
addresses the complexities of modern life, the urban environment, heartbreak
and romance.

* STEW and friends: Songs from Passing Strange and More
*    THE NEGRO PROBLEM

 <http://joespub.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=DX_c7AGhAC7-----AAFNzg>

7 PM, FREE tickets distributed on day of show

The enigmatic Stew rocks the house with two sets: one performing music in
concert from his hit show Passing Strange (featuring members of the original
cast) and another featuring classic songs and new music from Stew's
"afro-baroque" rockers The Negro Problem.

Direct from The Public Theater acclaimed production Passing Strange, Stew
takes the stage at the Delacorte for an unpredictable evening of surprises.
With a gift for hook-filled melodies, taut poetic narratives, incisive song
portraits and a sardonic sense of humor, the brilliant Stew and Heidi Rodewald
also recorded "Where's Gary?" for the most popular episode ever of "Spongebob
Squarepants." The New York Times raves: "(A) witty wordsmith, composer and
performer, Stew can also play a mean guitar, and when necessary, he strides
the stage like an evangelical preacher, or a preening rocker, to whip the
audience into a froth."
