Each month, KMUW's Global Village, highlights a particular artist or theme - along with new releases, artists making local and regional appearances and a great assortment of world and roots music. Throughout May, the focus will be on The Golden Age of African Music.
From the late 50s through the early 80s, the rise of independence movements across the African continent were paralleled by the birth of many different sounds and bands, including some of the most famous styles and greatest names of contemporary African music. In recent years, some of these pioneering groups have resurfaced and a series of reissues have made recordings from this Golden Age of African Music available once again.
For American listeners, what is often most surprising is how instantly familiar this music seems to be. But then American popular music has strong roots in Africa - and African musicians were readily incorporating funk, afrocuban, jazz and other familiar styles in their work as well. Throughout May, well explore classic recordings and major stars of this Golden Age on Global Village.
Global Village airs Monday through Friday at 9pm on KMUW. More information, including program playlists and the monthly Top 30, is available online at KMUW.org.
