The KAL scene last nightA friend in the press wrote this report from a concert
by Kal in Boston that I thought folks here would appreciate:

The concert was taking place at a Serbian church in my neighborhood. They're
in the midst of a festival of Serbian music and dance. It was quite a scene.
Get this: huge church basement, really bad sound system, the room is all
echoey, and the audience is composed of local Serbian families (all ages) who
are seated at large round tables, chit-chatting amiably before the musicians
get going. There's a table selling candy and snacks in the back, another with
CDs.

So the guys started the evening with a sound-check that wasn't too promising,
and I was feeling really bad for the musicians. But when they got started, it
was full-throttle right away, and sounded great. Of course people there got
into it quickly, clapping and laughing at all the funny things the lead singer
was saying in Serbian (he only spoke English to say that he felt very happy he
could speak his own language again and that there were probably enough people
around the room to translate).

About 10 minutes into the gig, there was some chatty bit in Serbian and
suddendly, half the room got up and walked to the front of the stage. Women
and men of all ages held hands, and they did a line dance right there, just as
if they were somewhere in Serbia, and this was the local village band playing
at a wedding.

It was great. And the whole thing of course, made complete sense.
As I said, it was quite a scene to be seen, right here in Boston.
