I represent the band....yes, this is funny.
Cliff - your remarks are ridiculous, my opinion...sorry. Isn't the point to
reach a larger audience for world music and global culture? Ladysmith
haven't changed their sound since Graceland. I seem to recall that record
doing quite a bit introducing "world music" to North America, no? They are
now going on 15+ years of touring and the audience keep getting bigger....go
figure.
The fact that they were part of this parody is a great example of how
international culture and music is reaching new and larger audiences.
Are we hoping to keep world music niche among the educated and pretentious?
My battle is to continue seeking as many avenues possible to raise awareness
and educate. To dismiss Ladysmith as "selling out to the masses" is quite
shortsighted.
Lastly...yes, they did just finish a sold -out performance at Carnegie hall.
Was a huge night with many special guests including retired, Pete Seeger. I
can only hope there are more Ladysmith Black Mambazo's out there who can
further expose art, culture and music from around the globe.
Those of you offended....come on....we work in the arts. Let's not take
ourselves so seriously, life it too quick.
Pardon my defensive tone - need to back my crew.
love and respect,
T

I think this entry I just lifted off the LBM tour blog pretty much speaks
for itself....

We're still in Outer Space
As many of you know, or have read in prior blogs, the well known USA tv show
"Saturday Night Live" showed a cartoon parody last February called
"Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Outer Space." It was quite an honor to have
such a famous tv show do such a cartoon featuring our group. They said it
was so well received they ran the cartoon several more times over the last
few months.
Recently, our manager received a phone call from Saturday Night Live and
they said they were creating a DVD of their most popular cartoons and would
include "Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Outer Space" in it. They asked if we
would sit down with them, watch the cartoon and add some commentary for the
"bonus" section of the DVD, like many movies have.
So, while we were recently in Los Angeles we did this. It was quite fun.
In fact, they had done a cartoon about Mr. T, the famous American actor from
the "Rocky" movie and the tv show "The A-Team." Mr. T came in to do
commentary too and we all sat down together. It was so much fun. See our
Photo Gallery section for photos of us with Mr. T.

A "coup", to be associated with sophomoric put-downs? Let us not call it so,
nor in any other way encourage or credit bad art, in music, comedy, or any
other kind of what we hope to be creative expression. World music is getting
too polluted by low culture as is.
