[FA Worldmusic] anything new?

Thanks for kicking this off. The show that most blew me away recently
(besides the utterly amazing Manu Chao and equally utterly amazing
Lenine, but I knew both of those would be stellar) was by a new group
called Brooklyn Qawwali Party (formerly Brook's Qawwali Party). Brook
Martinez, the founder, is on hiatus.

Imagine Antibalas if they had been listening to Nusrat instead of Fela,
and then building jazz centered improvisations around it. Like Toubab
Krewe and Nomo - who I also think are hot new additions to the scene,
it's the kind of thing that sounds a little scary on paper, and then you
hear it and realize that they kill it, and find a unique new spin.

It's a little raw still, but funky, smart, loving, and they are really
finding their own voice. In a certain way, it's easier to do that for
them than it is for Antibalas, Nomo or Toubab, since the instrumentation
is so different.

Closest comparison might be Bollywood Brass Band from the UK, but I
think BQP are even more interesting and inventive

Don't mean to sound flippant, but it seems this listserve has become
little
more than an obituary section--is it just a lot of great artists are
dying
these days? Or is there nothing else of interest out there??

As the summer comes to a close, anyone want to start a discussion, maybe
best new bands seen this summer, best groups with the chance to make it
in
the states, anything else from the summer festival season of interest??

Mine happens to be a few very energetic shows I saw by the great LA band
Very Be Careful (www.verybecareful.com) but I am very cumbia-centric
these
days, so my vote might be a bit biased.

Anyone want to expand my horizons?
