'WEST FACES EAST'
If you are in New York and available this Wednesday, August 16th, we invite
you to attend Joe's Pub for a 9pm concert of Paula Jeanine's ensemble,
American Ghazal.
Ms. Jeanine, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, explores themes involving
traditional ghazal subjects such as love and longing for one's beloved. In
addition, she folds global and women's issues into the tapestry of her
writing and improvisations ("One piece of cloth, uninterrupted...").
"I didn't feel that jazz would hold this sort of improvisation, so I had to
create something new - while trying to be a credit to the gender." - Paula
Jeanine
Jerome Harris, the great bassist and guitarist, has been a group member and
supporter since the inception of the project several years ago, steeped in
Afropop, Avant and R & B. Other musical elements in the American Ghazal
project are classical cello (on recordings, sarangi by the master Ramesh
Mishra), and the sumptuous piano of Richard Bennett, weaving textures around
Paula's compelling, magical voice.
Following is a press release for a noteworthy double-bill at Joe's Pub, NYC,
16th August, 9PM -
Paula Jeanine and American Ghazal plus Brook's Qawwali Party.

"I have had the privilege of being Paula's Indian classical music guide and
teacher during her travels to India. As she was imbibing the Indian vocal
techniques her interest in urdu ghazal came to light. With her rich vocal
timbre, musical sensitivity and amazing poetry writing skills she captured
the true spirit of the urdu ghazal and it became apparent that he was on her
way to carving out a rare niche for herself... the American Ghazal. When I
today hear her brilliant interpretations of some of the classic all time
ghazals it brings me immense pride and joy." - Dhanashree Pandit-Rai, Jazz
India Vocal Institute, Mumbai
With performances from Lincoln Center to Goa, India, Billboard award-winning
songwriter, renowned percussionist and singer, Paula Jeanine trained in both
jazz and traditional raga vocal discipline. She is known for symbiotically
melding jazz fundamentals with elements of traditional South Asian poetic
forms such as ghazal, thumri and raga. American Ghazal is a concept
developed by Ms. Jeanine which uses the lyric style and traditional themes
of ghazal as a template, intertwined with a twenty-first century western
perspective, to emerge as a fusion of global forms. Paula Jeanine is
scheduled to do an American Consulate tour of India in September 2006 and
has been chosen to be the Voice of Peace at this year's World Assembly of

PRESS RELEASE
August 3, 2006
American Ghazal Singer Paula Jeanine to Perform in Four-City Western India
Tour this September
MUMBAI - Visionary singer, poet, percussionist and composer Paula Jeanine is
known for developing the concept of American Ghazal, in which elements of
South Asian music are melded with western fundamentals.
With performances from New York's Lincoln Center to Morocco's Royal Palace,
Jeanine is a Billboard award winning artist trained in both jazz and
traditional raga vocal discipline. Inspired by ghazal, thumri and khayal,
Ms. Jeanine has been freely adapting, composing and performing songs for her
supple modern voice informed by ancient sources.
A true American thinker, Ms. Jeanine has sought to overcome artistic
boundaries in developing repertoire that suits her unique vocal colors and
poetic direction. Expanding on traditional ghazal topics of love and divine
longing, Jeanine weaves themes of family, cultural identity, loss and
women's issues into the fabric of her songs.
This summer, Jeanine was chosen to be one of the Voices for Peace at the
World Assembly of Religions for Peace in Kyoto, Japan. Her deep commitment
to intercultural harmony will be the theme of her India performances. In
the upcoming four city tour, arranged by the American Center, Jeanine will
have the unique opportunity to collaborate with regional musicians in
Aurangabad, Mumbai, Raipur and Bhopal. Bowing to ghazal tradition, she has
requested that sarangi be added to the concerts, the plaintive "sound of 100
colors".
"I have had the privilege of being Paula's Indian classical music guide and
teacher during her travels to India. As she was imbibing the Indian vocal
techniques her interest in Urdu ghazal came to light. With her rich vocal
timbre, musical sensitivity and amazing poetry writing skills she captured

her way to carving out a rare niche for herself... the American Ghazal.
When I today hear her brilliant interpretations of some of the classic all
time ghazals it brings me immense pride and joy." - Dhanashree Pandit-Rai,
